2022 December Book Challenge

If You Ask Me: (And of Course You Won’t)

The New York Times bestseller from the beloved actress and Hollywood icon who’s made us laugh on shows from The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Golden Girls to Saturday Night Live!

In this candid take on everything from the unglamorous reality behind red-carpet affairs to her beauty regimen (“I have no idea what color my hair is, and I never intend to find out”), Betty White shares her observations about life, celebrity, and love (for humans and animals). Filled with photos, If You Ask Me is funny, sweet, and straight to the point—just like Betty.

Memoir Book from the Library :

Loved this book and could NOT put it down. Finished it in one reading and that would be my only remark, that it was not nearly long enough… but it was brilliant. Like Betty’s other books this one was like having a one-on-one sit down chat with Betty herself. Her takes on everything were heartfelt, hysterical and full of love, like the lady herself. It made me miss her even more, but what a remarkable, long and wonderful life she led. This book is like an extra gift from her. I love you Betty..

Ramón Montez always achieves his goals. Whether that means collecting Ivy League degrees or growing his father’s fast-food empire, nothing sets Ramón off course. Celebrity chef Julieta Campos has sacrificed everything to save her sea-to-table taqueria from closing. Julieta has no choice but to work with Ramón, the man who destroyed her life’s work—and the one man who tempts and inspires her.

As San Diego’s outraged community protests against the Taco King takeover and the divide between their families grows, Ramón and Julieta struggle to balance the rising tensions. But Ramón knows that true love is priceless and despite all of his successes, this is the one battle he refuses to lose.

Book Review (library)

Ramón and Julieta is a story of love despite the rift between families, yes, but also the story of a community coming together and the opportunity to right wrongs. Recommended for readers who appreciate retold classics, Chicano culture, examinations of real issues through fiction, and the idea that true love can pierce even the toughest walls built of grudges, hate, bad blood, and old wrongs.

A Lady’s Guide to Fortune-Hunting

Kitty Talbot needs a fortune. Or rather, she needs a husband who has a fortune. Left with her father’s massive debts, she has only twelve weeks to save her family from ruin.

Kitty has never been one to back down from a challenge, so she leaves home and heads toward the most dangerous battleground in all of England: the London season.

Kitty may be neither accomplished nor especially genteel—but she is utterly single-minded; imbued with cunning and ingenuity, she knows that risk is just part of the game.

The only thing she doesn’t anticipate is Lord Radcliffe. The worldly Radcliffe sees Kitty for the mercenary fortune-hunter that she really is and is determined to scotch her plans at all costs, until their parrying takes a completely different turn….

This is a frothy pleasure, full of brilliant repartee and enticing wit–one that readers will find an irresistible delight.

Library Book:

I picked this up without high expectations, but I have to say that it was refreshing. There wasn’t any sex or cursing, no real violence or drugs. It was a really wholesome story at a time when there aren’t many of these coming out. I’m not surprised that there is criticism because it’s not the typical book being released in modern times. The story is fairly straightforward with some mild humor. It’s an antiquated setting with a main character stuck at a time when women had few options. Some readers may hate that she is going to marry someone rich, but that’s the main point of the book, after all.

Book Review: Defying Ella

One cabin, one badly timed snowstorm, and one asshole drummer. What could possibly go wrong?

He has it – that thing. You know the one I mean, right?

It’s not just the natural-born talent that cascades from him in musical waves when he’s on stage, and it’s more than drive, more than passion.

It’s the one indescribable thing I can’t nail down for myself, and the man I despise more than anything right now, is throwing it away like it’s nothing. It’s infuriating.

He’s infuriating.

I didn’t expect to spend so much time with him, near him, on this tour. And so, when the opportunity arose to escape to the quiet of the cabin, I took it. Only for the self-obsessed prick to turn up not long after.

Now, I can’t escape him and the reminders of the week we shared, what feels like a lifetime ago.

He’s got what I want, what I need. But can he help me find mine? And do I even want him to?

Defying Ella is a steamy rockstar romance. It is the fourth book following the Rhiannon men and the fourth in the True Platinum Series. Can be read as a standalone.

If you love bad boy rock stars with a secret soft side meeting their match in an optimistic, strong-willed heroine, then Defying Ella is for you.

Book Review:

! This book is also a great tale of the heart wants what the heart wants. Despite Ella’s internal battle with the image Jared portrayed she never could give him up. When Jared would give the little glimpses of his true self to Ella, they both were happy and content. Loved their HEA and hope to see them show up again in later books.

Only Rakes Would Dare

In this sizzling opposites-attract Regency romance by Charlie Lane, a lady of passion and an earl of logic commit to a fake courtship as rakish as it is daring.

Lady Edith knows the sting of unrequited love, and now she wants only one thing—to marry a man who desires her or to never marry. But at the Season’s end, her father threatens to provide a husband if she cannot secure one herself. When a family friend saves her from the unwanted advances of one of their suitors, she falls a little bit in love. With his auburn hair and radical ideas about women, Griffin Paxton, the Earl of Eastern, is perfect. Except he doesn’t want her back.

Griffin will not be distracted by Lady Edith’s diamond-eyed beauty. He needs a wife to fulfill his dying father’s wish, and he needs her to be a model of propriety to repair the family reputation his rakish father sullied. When Lady Edith calls herself a rake, he knows she’ll never do. He’ll have to guard his attraction to her fiery spirit and open heart behind thick ice walls and look elsewhere.

But when Edith suggests they forge a fake engagement to appease both their fathers, Griffin can’t refuse. She needs his help, and he never ignores a damsel in distress. Will a fake courtship bring out their rakish desires, or will it offer a home to two hurting hearts?

Book Review:

This is the 5th installment of the Dare Series by Charlie Lane but can be read as a stand alone book I love an opposites-attract romance and this did not disappoint. Passion and logic intertwine to bring about a wonderful romance filled with passion and hope. Griffin and Edith are perfect for each other, and both are strong minded and intelligent. I was caught up in the this fake engagement, very engaging and even better happily ever after.

Surrendering to Hunt: A Wyoming Wilde Novel

New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Ryan returns to the Wyoming Wilde series as a by-the-book lawman tangles with a stubborn young woman. Perfect for fans of authors like Maisey Yates, Joanne Kennedy and Carolyn Brown as well as Diana Palmer, Linda Lael Miller, and BJ Daniels.

They’re tough, tenacious, and sometimes tormented; they’re the Wildes of Wyoming, three brothers whose family ties are as strong as their wills.

The last thing lawman Hunt Wilde ever dreamed he’d do was fall hard for a purple-haired troublemaker like Cyn Wilson. While Hunt believes in law and order, Cyn lives life fast and loose—with fast cars and wild nights. But when Cyn’s sister disappears, she surprisingly turns to him for help. Never let it be said that a Wilde man turned down a woman in distress—and on a mission.

It takes a lot for Cyn to swallow her pride and ask Hunt for anything. The man never gives her a break and is always staring at her with those perceptive eyes. But beneath Cyn’s tough exterior beats a heart as wide and beautiful as Wyoming itself—and soon she finds herself surrendering to the overpowering attraction simmering between them and partnering with him in the search for her missing sister.

She won’t rest until she learns the truth, even if that means putting herself in harm’s way. And when Hunt discovers how much danger Cyn is in because of him, he’s even more determined to take down the man who would take her out of Hunt’s life—forever.

book review

The Wilde men of Wyoming are willing, wanting, and wanton. Hunt has been watching Cyn from afar for awhile. She irks him but also intrigues him. She is a hotbed of trouble for sure who needs the steady reliableness of Hunt, who is a tall glass of sexy law enforcement.
There is a ton packed in the story. Lots of violence, headlong impetuousness by Cyn, and a swift relationship.

EXCERPT:

I can’t help but love people watching in a strip club. It’s New York City, so there’s usually something shady going on somewhere. Sometimes it’s more than just a lap dance. Sometimes it’s a guy getting thrown out for trying to make it more than just a lap dance. And sometimes you see the most unlikely people conducting business. I’m certain that’s one of the club owners. Pussycats. How utterly unoriginal. But damn, he can call this place whatever he wants. He’s hot.

“Bourbon on the rocks with a splash of water.”

“If you drank vodka, you wouldn’t need to dilute the taste.”

That voice. It’s sin waiting to happen. I look to my left, and the man who’d been in the corner talking to a rather large Italian-looking guy is now beside me. He was hot from a distance. He’s Lucifer in a suit up close. Are my panties on the floor? Those blue eyes might have just made them drop. They’re certainly wetter than they were a few minutes ago, watching Todd and the understudy stripper. God, I can be a b*tch. The girl is just doing her job.

“I had a bad experience with vodka in college. I steer clear.”

“Made yourself sick?”

“And if I’d like to continue to enjoy orange juice without being certain I taste vodka, I stay away.”

I offer him what I hope is a slightly sarcastic yet sexy smiley kind of smirk. From the way he’s grinning, it either worked, or he thinks I’m batsh*t. Oh! Maybe he did like it. He smells amazing, and now his chest is practically against the side of my shoulder. I can smell the hint of vodka on his breath, and for once, it doesn’t make me want to shiver and turn away.

“You didn’t look like you were having a good time earlier. Boyfriend not paying enough attention? Or perhaps too much attention?”

“He’s not my boyfriend.”

“Your date then.”

“Not a date. Those both imply romance. That’s not our arrangement. Partners in crime. Partners in fun. Definitely not partners in life.” I cock an eyebrow, waiting to see how he responds to me basically admitting that Todd is a f*ck buddy. We tried going on a couple dates. We enjoyed each other’s company, and we really enjoy having sex together, but no sparks ever flew for either of us.

“So you came for an appetizer, and I suppose you’re supposed to be the main course later.”

I look back over my shoulder and can’t find Todd. He’s not at the table I just left. I wonder if he went to the bathroom. He better not be taking care of anything, otherwise, I’ll have to do all the work to get him revved up again. Sometimes we enjoy the foreplay, but that wasn’t the deal tonight.

“Something like that.”

“But only one of you gets to sample. That hardly seems fair.”

“It’s fine for tonight.” Todd and I have been to clubs that allow us to do more than just watch. He might get a lap dance, and I might get his fingers. I might sit on his lap while he f*cks me, and I get a lap dance. We’re kinky like that, but we’ve never had a full-on threesome. Women just don’t interest me enough for that. Now two guys? One can only wish.

Mr. No Name shakes his head when the bartender approaches, and I reach for my purse. Before I can insist that I pay, he’s picking up both of our drinks and turning away from the guy. I don’t know what to say beyond a mumbled thanks. I follow this guy, which I know is ridiculous, but I’m too damn curious for my own good. He steers us away from the men in the corner where I first spotted him. There’s another man who looks so much like him they could be twins. My mystery man nods to his lookalike before taking us to a corner table on the opposite side of the stage.

“You can see if your friend returns. That way you won’t miss him.”

There’s something about his tone. Those two sentences have more than one meaning. As I meet his gaze, I can see it just as much as I heard it.

“Thank you for my drink. But I usually don’t accept drinks from strangers.”

“Good thing you watched it being poured. I’m Bogdan Kutsenko.”

Oh, holy f*cking sh*t. I thought he might be, but now I know. He’s a f*cking billionaire. He and his brothers own a slew of strip clubs, casinos, commercial developments, and Lord only knows what else. And I’m fairly certain that whatever else is not even close to legal. I’ve heard the rumors. Russian mafia.

“You recognize my name. Should I let you go back to your friend?”

My Review ( Net Galley / KU )

This is book 2 of The Ivankov Brotherhood but is a complete standalone. I did not read book 1, but did not have any issues. As it is a Brotherhood and they really are brothers, Bogdan and Christina . are the perfect soul mates and it was so great to see Tina as a strong female in a n Alpha world.

( Caution) This is a entertaining book with a relatively fast pace. The lead characters were good together, although some of their quirks were unusual. Tina and Bogdan have an extremely passionate relationship, some witty dialogue, and intense situations to navigate in search of their happily ever after
