Monday Book Date

Welcome to Monday

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? a place to meet up and share what you have been, and are about to be reading over the week. It’s a great post to organise yourself. It’s an opportunity to visit and comment and er… add to your groaning TBR pile! So welcome in everyone. My Last week reading :

  • 2 Garden books
  • 2 Children books
  • 1 Cookbook
  • 2 Romances

From the Library :

I just finished this book .

A riveting new read that will thrill you from #1 New York Times bestselling author Fern Michaels, perfect for fans of Nora Roberts, Rachel Caine, and J.D. Robb.
Ellie Bowman barely remembers the incident that put her into a coma. When she awoke, filled with unease, all she knew for certain was that her boyfriend, Rick, was missing. She knew she needed to get away from her old life and recover in safety. With the proceeds of a video game she helped develop, Ellie starts over in rural Missouri, working from her cottage and trusting no one except her friend and business partner.
Yet even in this quiet small town, it’s impossible to completely isolate herself. Especially when a curious eight-year-old boy, smitten with Ellie’s pup, stops by every day to talk to him over the fence. Little by little, Ellie is being drawn back into the world through the neighbors and community around her, realizing that everyone has their own fears and obstacles to contend with.
But when Ellie hears that Rick has resurfaced, her nightmares return, and with them, small snippets of memory. No one has heard from Rick since before the incident, so why is he back now? Ellie wants to move forward with her life, but first she must find the courage to look into her past, no matter what she finds there . . .

Book thoughts:

Not your typical book from this author 9 This is a thriller) -so I was glad I could read a copy from the library. It’s a very character driven book as Ellie is front and center of the book. I did like the messages about the power of supportive neighbors, trusting yourself, embracing friendship, starting .over, and reaching out to others when you need help. However, the story is slow-building and slow-paced. So glad I grabbed a copy from the Library.

Kindle Unlimited : On my Tablet :

Make sure you check with me and see what I am reading next…. Lisa

Hannah hasn’t been back to her hometown in more than twenty years. Now, a widow, raising a teenaged daughter, she has the opportunity to go home for her twenty-fifth high school reunion. The invitation to the reunion stirs up a lot of old memories at the same time she is dealing with loneliness, the challenges of single-parenting a teenager, people who want to “set her up” with eligible men, her own insecurities, and her eccentric family.

The story interweaves the present with scenes from Hannah’s past and her fantasy of “happily ever after” with her high school boyfriend in a humorous and entertaining manner. Her feelings from being “shunned” by the cool kids resurface as she reflects back on her time as a teenager. There are several roadblocks on Hannah’s journey from a teenager through her present. Author Spotlight:

My husband and I are quite competitive. Each morning we read the Trivia questions in the paper and see who got the most questions right. Then the winner gloats. If, for some reason, my husband reads the paper before I do, he actually writes down how many questions he got right. Then, later that day, he will ask me how many I got right. Generally, I tell the truth, even if I didn’t get as many right as he did and have a clear-cut opportunity to pretend I did.

Trivial Pursuit often leans more in his favor because he knows the answers to all those obscure history and geography questions. It wouldn’t be so bad if he didn’t feel the need to pontificate over every question. We tried playing Monopoly—once—but he makes his own little, dirty, side deals with other players, such as allowing them a free pass on his properties if they allow him a free pass on theirs, while showing no mercy to other players, such as his wife. He is equally merciless when playing Sorry, never giving anyone, including small children, a break. Don’t even get me started on miniature golf. He meticulously counts each and every stroke and revels in his opponent’s misfortunes. If I add the score at the end of the game and for some reason, he has more strokes than I do, he insists on checking the math, himself.

Recently, in the Trivia section of the newspaper, there was a question which asked, “Which sense is less sharp after one eats too much?” The answers from which to choose included: hearing, smelling, sight, and taste. The answer, strangely enough, is hearing—which I got right, by the way, and he missed. This explains a lot. I have complained for a long time that my husband doesn’t hear me and have nagged him repeatedly to have his hearing checked. Of course, with his competitive nature, he will not admit that my hearing is better than his. Now I know it’s not a matter of who has the better hearing. He just overeats.

Guest Post:

I never wanted to be a writer.  Or at least I never knew I did until I sort of stumbled into it.  But I always had stories rolling around in my head and when my husband started writing a Western novel, I thought…hummm…maybe I could do that.

I had characters and a plot in mind right away, a western romance because I loved reading them, and coming from a western background (my great grandmother came out in a covered wagon), I was comfortable in that time frame.

But how to actually write?

I needed to learn the basics so I went to the first writers’ conference I could find, which happened to be in Santa Barbara, California and turned out to be one of the best in the country.  I went to all the classes and discovered that one of the speakers gave semi-private lessons on writing, once a week in L.A.  My husband and I decided to go.

We made the two-hour drive every week for a year, all the while attending other local conferences and doing our homework on who was publishing what and how to find an agent.  I also joined RWA, which I highly recommend.

We were both writing madly, determined to finish our novels.  We went to critic groups, went to another writing class, this one two hours away in Fresno.

The books got completed.  Now we needed to find a way to sell them.

When we sent our money in for the Fresno Writer’s Conference, fortune intervened.  We were told that an agent would be attending the conference and she would be willing to read sixty pages of any attendee’s book.

I desperately needed an agent.  Since I have always been a firm believer in taking the extra step, instead of mailing the pages, I dressed in my best leather outfit and drove to Hollywood.  Unfortunately the temperature soared to one-hundred degrees that day.  By the time I climbed the stairs to the agent’s office, my stomach quaking with nerves, I was drenched in perspiration.

When the agent walked into the reception area, I was almost too nervous to speak.  I managed to croak-out in a squeaky little voice, “Hi, I’m Kat Martin.  I just happened to be in the neighborhood so I thought I’d drop this by.”

The agent grinned.  Clearly, I wasn’t “in the neighborhood.”  The good news was, she liked authors who were aggressive about their careers and she was impressed with my moxie.  After reading the pages, she took me on as a client.  She also decided to represent my husband.

Both of us were turned down by just about every publisher in New York.  I was sick to my stomach, terrified my year-and-a-half, twelve-hour-a-day writing effort would be for naught, but the agent wouldn’t give up.

The last publisher among her submissions made an offer for MAGNIFICENT PASSAGE and I was over the moon.

I was even more excited when they decided to make the book the lead title for their new line of romances.  It was my first break in the business and though the company ultimately folded and I was out of work, the lesson was clear.

If you want to succeed as a writer–never give up. To that point I’ve written over seventy romance novels!!

In THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL, book #3 in my Maximum Security series, released in paperback on 12/29/20, when investigative journalist Jessie Kegan’s father, a colonel in the army, is accused of treason, she’s determined to clear his name.  With her life in danger, Jessie turns to former Special Ops soldier, Brandon Garrett.  But time is running out and the game being played is deadly.

Working together, Bran and Jessie risk everything to solve the riddle and confront the threat–before it’s too late.

I hope you’ll watch for THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL and that you can travel vicariously to some of the settings in the book.  Until next time, all best and happy reading.  Kat

Excerpt 1

Jack had never been so grateful for central heating as when they stepped back into the house from the biting nor’easter. Even the dog had the good sense to stay out only long enough to do her business then come straight back inside.

Raven’s jaw trembled. “We’d better g-g-et these w-w-et clothes off before we c-c-catch cold. L-l-laundry room.” She turned and sprinted for the small room off the rear of the kitchen.

She shed her jacket, then tried to peel her soaked sweatshirt off her body but got stuck mid-way through. “Um…h-help.” Her arms were tangled in the wet cloth above her head.

Jack tossed his own sweater and T-shirt into the open washer, then freed her from her sweatshirt.

“T-thanks,” she said, then whipped off her freezing tank, leaving her topless.

Jack barely noticed, since he was too busy removing his drenched sweatpants which had chilled him straight to the bone. By the time they were in the washer along with the rest of the clothes, Raven was fighting to free her legs from her jeans. Jack reached down and gave her an extra hand, stripping them off her skin.

Raven’s teeth rattled but she still managed a smile. “Th-thank you.” Her shoulders were hunched and her arms were tight against her body, her wrists crossed at her breasts. She shook like a leaf in a hurricane.

“Come here.” He pulled her to his chest and wrapped himself around her, letting his chin gently rest against the top of her head. Breathing deep, he drank her in. She was soft and smelled like rain. And though she was so much smaller than he, and her features so petite, in his arms, she felt like she was made to fit against his body. His wide palms stroked the length of her back.

Raven exhaled and relaxed into him, releasing her arms. On a sigh, she threaded her hands around his waist and nuzzled her face against his left pec. He imagined she was listening to his heartbeat, and wondered if it quickened as their skin heated against each other’s.

She tilted her head to meet his gaze. “You’re so warm.” Her brown eyes searched his.

“As warm as you.” God, she was gorgeous.

“Kiss me.”

Aaand there went his plan to keep things platonic. Together-but-separate was impossible with this woman. He wanted to be around her. In her. Whatever it took.

Monday Book Date 11/9

It’s time once again for Kathryn’s weekly meme, “It’s Monday, What are You Reading”, at Book Date, where we share what we’re reading and have read over the past week.

What I Read Last Week

Not much reading but I did work on getting some back book reviews for Net Galley up to date on my blog. . I also started my holiday reading list of books with some non fiction thrown in. So my book date is a Snowman or maybe a joy old pan on a red suite ! Just finished this from the Net Galley back list…. Lisa

Not even her impending nuptials can keep Lucy Berberian, manager of her family-owned Kebab Kitchen, from the Jersey Shore’s annual Polar Bear Plunge. But her dive into the icy ocean is especially chilling when she finds a fellow swimmer doing the dead man’s float—for real . . .

On my Holiday Reading list:

Just finished this book with kindle unlimited. A favorite author of mine :

In#1 New York Times bestselling author Fern Michaels’ heartwarming holiday novel, Christmas is a time for remembering loved ones—past and present . . .
Joy Preston misses her beloved late grandmother dearly. But when she learns the terms of Nana’s will, she’s shocked—and more than a little irked. Joy’s life is in Denver. How can Nana have expected her to give that up, even temporarily, to take over a bed and breakfast in North Carolina for six months? Still, there’s no denying Heart and Soul’s charm, especially at holiday time . . .
The B&B is always elaborately decorated for the season, with themed guest rooms and dazzling lawn displays created for the annual Parade of Homes competition. The entire town takes part in the festivities, and soon, Joy is too, letting her reservations melt away. Yet there’s another reason for Heart and Soul’s popularity . . .
Rumor has it that, during the holidays, guests can be reunited with the spirit of a loved one who’s passed on. Joy is skeptical, yet she feels her Nana’s influence all around her—perhaps even indulging in a little matchmaking between Joy and a handsome estate attorney who just might inspire a magical new beginning . .

Coming next up – Releases 11/10:

Perfect for Thanksgiving from Net Galley :

Look no further than The Book on Pie for the only book on pie you’ll ever want or need.

Erin Jeanne McDowell, New York Times contributing baker extraordinaire and top food stylist, wrote the book on pie, a comprehensive handbook that distills all you’ll ever need to know for making perfect pies. The Book on Pie starts with the basics, including ways to mix pie dough for extra flaky crusts, storage and freezing, recipe size conversions, and expert tips for decorating and styling, before diving into the recipes for all the different kinds of pies: fruit, custard, cream, chiffon, cold set, savory, and mini.

Thanks for stopping byre and check out my newest reviews on my blog….. Lisa
