Actress Kara Kensington flies to New Hope, Wisconsin, where she’ll spend the winter holidays filming a movie. Her entire career depends on the success of the feel-good story based on her best friend’s life. To salvage her strained friendship with Dani, Kara asks the cute guy from the flight to act as her new boyfriend. But the longer she spends with him, the less she’s acting.

For Chef Scott Neil, his holidays aren’t only about family togetherness. He wants Aunt Shirley and Uncle Ted to retire. When he’s asked to fake a relationship with Kara, he agrees. As he gets drawn into Kara’s production, he questions what is real and what’s just for show. Only a fool would fall in love with America’s sweetheart.

The biggest question remained unanswered, and he’d probably missed the normal window of opportunity for basic information. Who was she? Kara Wilson? Kara Campbell? Did finding out her full name even matter if they wouldn’t see each other again? He couldn’t search on the Internet without a last name. He shook off the thought. Kara was a momentary distraction from his very real mission. He needed focus.

She gasped. “Wow, wow, wow.”

Her voice shook. He squinted and glanced at the rearview mirror. “You okay?” He couldn’t read the tremor in her voice. Was she worried about something? He spotted the van two car lengths behind him, driving steady. “What’s wrong?”

“The interstate is covered in snow.”

He pressed together his lips. Less than an inch accumulated on the shoulder. The road itself was clear and dry. Was she worried the precipitation would somehow gain sentience and jump in front of her tires? “Covered might be a stretch. Wisconsin has more snow than L.A. and a greater accumulation than the beaches of Hawaii.”

She sighed. “Don’t mention paradise, or I might lose my nerve and head back to the airport.”

The strains of ukulele played in his memory. He spent last year’s holiday working at the house on the north shore of Oahu. Long hours weren’t balanced by the warm breezes and crashing waves. He preferred time off, and he wouldn’t complain about the Wisconsin weather.
